My endless curiosity for science and my passion for writing drew me to science and medical writing more than two decades ago. My career started in the newsroom of a daily newspaper in South Carolina’s Lowcountry and included a decade as a news staff writer at JAMA. For the past 10 years I’ve run a successful freelance writing business, SciBridge Media, Inc. My work has been featured in JAMA, Circulation, Nature Medicine, Kidney News, Northwestern Medicine, Weill Cornell Medicine, and eLife.
I love freelancing and the variety of work it allows me to do everything from writing and editing lay language summaries, to profiles, news briefs and columns, feature length science and medical news stories, reports, meeting coverage and reports, as well as thought leadership pieces. I’m skilled at vetting scientific and medical research and finding well-qualified sources. I enjoy the challenge of interviewing top scientists and physicians about their cutting-edge research. I’ve built a reputation as a writer who can handle tough topics, whether its writing about complex science or controversies in medicine or science.
My combination of training sets me apart from many other writers. I have both a master’s degree in journalism from Northwestern University’s Medill School of Journalism, one of the top journalism schools in the country, and an undergraduate degree in biology from the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign. I also completed a Howard Hughes Undergraduate Research Fellowship, which gave me hands on bench research experience.
My work both inside and outside of scientific organizations has given me a unique perspective on the culture of medicine and science. This has enabled me to write about how government and institutional policies and culture shape science, medical care, and effect the professionals who practice in these fields.
When I’m not writing or editing, I enjoy gardening, and volunteering to restore natural areas and promote sustainability and spending time with my family and pets.
I look forward to learning more about you and how we can work together!
Whether it’s the molecular level details of how cells function, cutting-edge medical treatments or how policy shapes our health, I have a special talent for making the most complex subjects easy to understand. I have spent more than 20 years and counting providing an array of content for news organizations, specialized medical journals, universities, and health and science institutions.
Before starting SciBridge Media in 2014, I was a senior staff writer for the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) covering clinical research, health policy and many areas of medicine, including mental health, substance abuse and infectious disease. During my tenure, I helped launch and maintain JAMA’s blog and bolstered their social media presence with live Tweeting and other social media-driven strategies.
As a professional health, medical and science writer, I have worked with such top tier medical and science publications as The American Society of Nephrology’s Kidney News, Medscape, Weill Cornell Medicine, Northwestern Medicine magazine, and eLife, an international science journal funded by the Howard Hughes Medical Institute.
My stories are data-driven and meticulously sourced. I enjoy the challenge of interviewing top scientists and physicians about their cutting-edge research. I’ve built a reputation as a writer who can handle tough topics, whether it is explaining the intricacies of molecular biology or controversies in medicine or science.
Besides an insatiable curiosity for all things science, what uniquely qualifies me for this niche is my educational background. I earned my master’s degree in journalism from Northwestern University’s Medill School of Journalism, one of the top journalism schools in the country, and my undergraduate degree in biology from the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign. I also completed a Howard Hughes Undergraduate Research Fellowship, which gave me hands on bench research experience.
When I’m not cranking out stories, I enjoy native plant gardening, and volunteering to restore natural areas and spending time with my family and pets.
